Carlos Nuñez is a Spanish musician considered one of the best pipers in the world.

GRANDMA MOSES

Anna Mary Robertson Moses, known as grandma moses, was an american folk artist.
(September 7, 1860 -December 13, 1961)
She started her career in arts in her late 70s when the arthritis unable her to embroidery. She painted mostly scenes of rural life. 
In 1938 an art collector Louis J. Caldor saw some of her paintings priced for 3 to 5 dollars and bought them all, went to the painters house and bought ten others she had there. The next year 3 of her paintings where at the museum of modern art in New York. After some solo exhibitions collectors from all over the world wanted her paintings and so  she became highly sought after. She painted over 1600 canvasses in 3 decades and her paintings were reproduced on christmas cards, fabrics and tiles in America and abroad.
In 1952 she published her autobiography titled Grandma Moses: My Life's Story. She died on December 13, 1961 at 101 years old.

Comenzó su carrera artística a la edad de 70 años y cuando la artritis le impidió continuar con sus trabajos de bordado. Sus pinturas estaban basadas en la escena de la vida rural.
En 1938 el coleccionista de arte Louis J. Calder viajando, vio algunas de sus pinturas y, con unos precios muy bajos, de 3 a 5 dólares, dependiendo del tamaño. Compró todas y se acercó a la casa de la pintora, donde le compró los 10 cuadros que le quedaban. Al año siguiente, 3 de sus pinturas se exhibieron en el museo moderno de arte en Nueva York. Después de algunas exposiciones, coleccionistas de todo el mundo querían sus pinturas, por lo que alcanzó gran notoriedad. Granma Moses pintó más de 1600 cuadros en 3 décadas y sus pinturas fueron reproducidas como tarjetas navideñas, en telas y azulejos, tanto en America como en el exterior.
En 1952 publicó su autobiografía titulada Grandma Moses: la historia de mi vida. Murió el 13 de Diciembre, 1961 a la edad de 101 años.

TO BE A PAINTER

To be a painter is something exhausting.

You have to be  passionately restless, enthusiastic, courageous, curious; blindly believe in what you do.

You must be patient, hard worker and preserve the innocence. Able to produce concentration and humility and got the virtue of one who forgets about himself -including hunger and thirst-. Always look like you are learning to see for the first time. To walk the same path several times and in all directions, searching for something -where there is nothing-, and then have the extraordinary good fortune to hit the mark. To find long after, a voice, a self-image that says something -to provoke-, that inspire anyone who look at it. If that is not already too much to ask, an unforgettable emotion.

INSPIRED BY THE ROOTS

Walking around town passing through a street i've been on many occasions. I suddenly feel attracted by this trees and its magnificent roots. I put my hands on the roots, feeling they are living beings -marveling at its beauty. But, where i have been all this time?... We are surrounded by art and beauty -just have to open our eyes.
I couldn't resist to take some photos.

Paseando por la ciudad, en una calle por la que he pasado muchas veces. De repente, me siento atraída por estos árboles y sus magnificas raíces. Puse mis manos en sus raíces, sintiendo que son seres vivos, y maravillándome de su belleza. Pero, ¿donde he estado todo este tiempo?... Estamos rodeados de arte y belleza -solo tenemos que abrir nuestros ojos.
No pude resistir el tomar unas fotos.

LITTLE BIG WOMAN

MAUD LEWIS  (March 7, 1903 -July 30, 1970) -  A CANADIAN FOLK ART ARTIST


She suffered rheumatoid arthritis - something that left her fingers deformed.  Her mother taught her to paint christmas cards, which they sold to neighbors. When her parents died her brother inherited and he made no provisions for his sister that went to live with her aunt.
In 1938 she married Everett Lewis, after responding to his ad for a house keeper. They lived in a tiny cottage - she painted every available surface of it. Because her arthritis she was unable to do housework so her husband took care of the house and she brought money in through her paintings - paintings that Everett sold during her lifetime.
 She spend the days sitting on a chair beside the window - painting. 
She painted rural life, flowers, cats, birds, horses, oxen teams - all of her paintings are of outdoor scenes.
Maud Lewis died at 67 - suffered lung damage to constant exposure to paint fumes and wood smoke, contracted pneumonia and died in hospital. She was buried in a child's coffin.

Padeció de artritis reumatoide, enfermedad  que dejó los dedos de sus manos deformados. Su madre le enseñó a pintar tarjetas navideñas, que ellas vendían a los vecinos. Cuando sus padres murieron, su hermano, obtuvo la herencia familiar y dejó a su hermana sin provisión; por lo que ella marchó a vivir con su tía.
En 1938 se casó con Everett Lewis, después de acudir a la solicitud de empleo como ama de llaves. Los dos vivieron en una casa pequeña, en la cual, ella pintó todas las superficies disponibles. Debido a la artritis, no podía realizar las tareas del hogar - su marido cuidaba la casa y ella, ayudaba en el sustento con sus pinturas - que Everett vendía.
Maud Lewis pasaba sus días sentada en una silla al lado de la ventana, pintando. Sus pinturas reflejaban la vida rural, flores, gatos, pájaros, caballos, grupos de bueyes - todas sus pinturas eran una muestra de la vida al aire libre.
Murió a los 67 años - tenia daños en los pulmones debido a la exposición constante a los vapores de las pinturas, y al humo de la estufa. Contrajo neumonía y murió en el hospital. Fue enterrada en un ataúd infantil.

10 Things artists should be thankful for

By the time most artists come to see me, they are usually beaten down and depressed by the struggles of the artworld.  They have been abused by their galleries, taken for granted by their collectors, misunderstood by their families and exhausted from juggling real life with creative need. It is so easy to forget how special you are, when there is no one around to remind you, but you.  So, in the spirit of Thanksgiving, I give you my list of 10 Things Artists Should Be Thankful For.  Print this out, fold it up and put in your wallet.  Send it to your artist friends.  Read it whenever you feel all your work is for nothing and you are thinking maybe you should just stop making art and grow up.  Post it in your studio when you are wondering what the heck you are going to do with all this work?  But, most of all…believe it. Remember, it is impossible to feel thankful and be depressed at the same time.


1. I am thankful that I am not one of the majority of people in this world that wakes up every morning, goes to a job they hate, just to come home and do it all over again.
2.  I am thankful that when I am away from my studio, my ideas come with me, they keep me company everywhere I go.
3.  I am thankful for this passion that gives me so much joy (and angst) but mostly joy.
4.  I am thankful that when I have left this earth, I will leave something meaningful behind.
5.  I am thankful that I have a mind that can not sleep, I will never be bored.
6.  I am thankful that there is a part of my life that nobody can control, except me.
7.  I am thankful that no one in the world can ever take this gift from me.
8.  I am thankful that I am brave, it takes courage to pursue my gift.
9.  I am thankful that I am never satisfied, it forces me to move forward and grow.
10.  I am thankful I discovered this list!  Pass it on.

10 cosas por las que los artistas deberían estar agradecidos.

Cuando la mayoría de los artistas vienen a verme, por lo general se sienten abatidos y deprimidos por las luchas del mundo del arte. Han sido objeto de abusos por parte de sus galerías, sus coleccionistas dan todo por sentado, se sienten incomprendidos por sus familias y agotados de hacer malabares con la necesidad de creatividad. Es muy fácil olvidarse de lo especial que uno es, cuando no hay nadie alrededor para recordárnoslo; solo uno mismo. Por lo tanto, en este espíritu de gratitud, te doy mi lista de las  10 cosas por las que los artistas deberían estar agradecidos. Imprímela, dóblala y ponla en tu cartera. Envíalo  a tus amigos artistas. Léela cada vez que sientas que tu trabajo no sirve para nada y piensas que tal vez deberías dejar de hacer arte. Ponla en tu estudio para verla, cuando te preguntes ¿ que diablos voy a hacer con todos mis trabajos? Pero, por encima de todo, cree en ello. Recuerda, es imposible sentirse agradecido y estar deprimido al mismo tiempo.

1. Estoy agradecido por que no soy uno mas de la mayoría de la gente en este mundo que se despierta cada mañana y va a un trabajo que odia, sólo para volver a casa y volver a comenzar de nuevo.

2. Estoy agradecido que cuando estoy lejos de mi estudio, mis ideas se vienen conmigo; que me acompañan a todas partes.

3. Estoy agradecido por esta pasión que me da tanta alegría (y también angustia) pero, sobre todo, alegría.

4. Estoy agradecido de que cuando me vaya de esta tierra, voy a dejar algo significativo detrás.

5. Estoy agradecido de que tengo una mente que no puede dormir, nunca estaré aburrido.

6. Estoy agradecido de que hay una parte de mi vida que nadie puede controlar, excepto yo.

7. Estoy agradecido de que nadie en el mundo puede quitarme este don.

8. Estoy agradecido de que soy valiente, se necesita valor para seguir con mi don.

9. Estoy agradecido de que nunca estoy satisfecho, me obliga a seguir adelante y crecer.
